Introducing solids in 2020. The ‘Taste it’ eBook has been updated with the latest research listed below on reducing the risk of allergy, fussy eating and obesity. All other information within ‘taste it’ is within the 2020 guidelines for introducing solids:

  1. Progress with texture, food variety and number of meals per day based on YOUR baby’s preference i.e. ‘Lucy-lead Weaning’ independent or needing help; puree doesn’t need to be avoided
  2. Include allergenic foods early (4 to 11-months) and twice a week unless your baby has a diagnosed allergy to a specific food
  3. Iron rich foods first (cooked red meat, iron fortified infant cereal or oats, poultry, legumes, tofu, fish)
  4. Add cow’s milk or adult milk alternative not infant formula to food. Keeps food tasting like family foods
  5. FOODS TO AVOID raw egg (salmonella risk) and honey (botulism risk) unless your baby has a diagnosed food allergy
  6. Food to be given in response to hunger and satiety NOT for reward or comfort, i.e. self regulation
  7. Follow a routine to reduce grazing on snack-type foods
  8. Carer models behaviour and interest in food
  9. Early exposure to bitter and sour foods
  10. MESS is purposeful play
  11. Introduce appropriate utensils from 10-months
  12. If your baby was born premature once they start solids relax and enjoy the process don’t focus on calories
