As a new Mum I have been in search for information from breastfeeding to fingerfoods.I have read many other baby books and have gained a lot of information, but no other book I have come across exposes the reader to the real face of motherhood. Jan welcomes you into her life with her personal experiences, giving you the information you want but also the story behind her journey as a mother. I felt inspired and equiped with tools to use straight away, without the niggling guilt of not doing things 'just like the book'. You wont be disspointed!

Thank you for your mum and baby book. The way you have written it is easy to follow and with your own story woven throughout, makes it real. Funnily enough I started with the final word. As I read it, it made me realise that whether you are a new mum or an old one there will always be challenges but at the heart of it we are all wanting to do the best for our children and in turn they will always have something to teach us. Thanks so much

Jan, I have been reading your book and ur a real inspiration! After reading it I was stunned and felt the need to text you right away but didn’t have your mobile number. I was truly moved by your story and wanted to let you know how grateful I was for your help and support.

I had to read the diary part from cover to cover. It is so well done, I love the format and can't put it down. Well done!

Today, I received your book in the mail and I let the kids watch television this afternoon so I could read it. I then got so caught up in it, that I had to put them to bed early to finish it.
I really enjoyed it. Not only is it a great reference book- wish I had it when my kids were little.
I also found it easy to read as I felt like I was in one of your 'sessions';coming away with a bit more knowledge and knowing that I wasn't a failure and that we're all on a huge learning journey.
Thank you too for sharing your 'journey' with us the readers. I cried when I read that you didn't have a 2nd birthday party; I winced reading about the cracked nipples and laughed at the similarities between Dan, Gus and my two boys. You're so brave in so many ways. Thank you for doing the great job that you do

Raising children used to be seen as firmly within the domain of parents and extended family, but the tendency now is to outsource problem-solving to the experts. One risk of this is that many “professionals” aren’t really qualified to be giving advice, making a nice change with the author of this book. Jan Murray has done the conventional, hard yards when it comes to earning some authority. As a midwife, child and family health nurse and mother of five children, she has a reasonable understanding of what parents experience and what they want to know.
This is Murray’s latest book in a series of parenting paperbacks, where she combines professional expertise with her own personal, reflective stories of mothering. Mum and baby - together we learn, is more than just a guide on how to manage feeding/sleep/routines, although these issues are still addressed.
The strength here is how the author provides ideas on accommodating a new baby into the family so that everyone still has their needs met. The dynamic nature of an expanding family demands a different parenting approach, but in many books this simple fact is often overlooked and the newborn gets all the focus.
The book’s title gives a hint regarding Murray’s belief that confidence is a two way process between mother and baby; the pressure’s off to know it all. The design is thoughtful too, probably to optimise the chances of sleep deprived parents in retaining some of the information. Bullet pointed, practical tips are outlined with chapters covering behaviour, illnesses, development and the little understood issue of reflux comprehensively done.
In a market saturated with books on baby and child care, this one stands out for its usefulness and common sense approach. Trust a nurse to deliver it well.

I am the mother of a 2 year old boy and a new 11 week old girl. I found this book full of realistic practical advice for both my children. I poured over so many books looking for a magical solution to everything for my first child. So nice to hear from a mums point of view who understands how individual our children are.
